What is the price of a heat pump? How much does a gas furnace cost? How much will we pay for the installation of heating foils?
We are back with the topic of heating, specifically the topic of choosing a heat source, which is crucial in terms of future operating costs. A couple of weeks ago we started a series: which heating to choose ? In the first part, we focused on the assumptions, what is most important in terms of heating from a design point of view, the location of the building on the plot, that is, what to pay attention to in order to reduce operating costs at the design stage.
What kind of home heating to choose?
Since this year, the topic becomes all the more important, because a lot of elements are changing that affect our bills. Electricity is getting more expensive, gas is getting more expensive, the way photovoltaics are billed is changing, and there are also problems with connecting gas to buildings, and these are not favorable changes.
The heat source is the heart of the installation, and it is this source that we want to focus on now. The heat source affects the other elements of the installation, the way it is distributed, whether radiators or underfloor heating. It is also the most expensive component. From our perspective, we want it to be comfortable and as economical as possible. Economical taking into account both the cost of purchase and the cost of operation. We simply want the price/quality/comfort ratio to be as good as possible.
If you have been following our posts for a long time you have probably noticed that this parameter of economy is very important to us. We arrange construction and investment decisions under this parameter, after all, we want to spend money wisely. We want to allocate the budget for elements that will lower our bills, improve our comfort. To talk about the parameters of the rate of return of the investment, we must first know its price.
So what is the current price of the heat source? There are many possibilities. We will focus on the most comfortable and maintenance-free modern ones. Heating foils, air heat pump, condensing gas furnace?
On the basis of one investment, the construction of Barn Hause L, we compared the costs of various heat sources including heating and hot water (DHW) equipment. This is a 240,85 m² building. You can find all the parameters of the building on the Project Barn Hause L page.

As you can see, the air heat pump, including installation, with the entire boiler room (heat tank, heat buffer, piping system, etc.) and the underfloor heating necessary for its operation is a gross cost of 60-78 thousand zlotys. Those that were priced were of high quality. The price depends, of course, on the manufacturer of the pump, the systems and materials used, the region of Poland (it is worth pricing in several places, often companies provide installation services throughout Poland). Very important when buying and choosing a solution, and then when installing is to check whether the installer is recommended by the manufacturer of the heat pump, and consequently the warranty service should also be provided by the manufacturer. heat pump price
With an air heat pump and a gas furnace, the installation of underfloor heating is included in the pricing.
When pricing the gas furnace, the gas connection to the building and to a distance of about 10 m and the distribution of gas in the building to the boiler were included, also the chimney with ejection through the wall.
When pricing heating foils for the building, we must remember that in this way we can heat the house, but not the domestic water. Therefore, in the valuation in the boiler house item, the cost of a 300l DHW heat pump is included.
+ storage heater without installation. So the cost of installation of these devices should still be added to this amount.
Summary
Looking at the amounts listed in the tables, we see that a gas furnace comes out the cheapest. This is a difference of about 15,000 PLN compared to an air source heat pump. However, with the current price turmoil, this difference can be reduced very quickly by the high purchase price of gas. Unfortunately, we cannot balance gas in any way. In the case of electricity-based solutions, we can always balance consumption with profits from photovoltaics.
Similarly to the gas furnace comes out the cost of installing heating films.
Remember, however, that in order to choose a heat source, it is necessary in the second step to check how much energy the source consumes, that is, how much it will cost us in operation. Our basic calculations show (making very general assumptions and conditions for the described building) that the bills just for heating the house with heating foils will be about 60% higher than with an air source heat pump.
For example, to balance the electricity consumption of the heating foils for heating Barn L alone (without domestic consumption) we would need to install photovoltaics of about 9.5 kW, while balancing the heat pump for heating alone is about 4.4 kW.
